Submissions

We publish pieces in multiple formats:

  • These are longer pieces, usually 2-5k words or 10-30 pages of poetry. We publish one a month. These are formatted into a small zine to be mailed to our supporters as well as posted on the website in English and Spanish and produced into a podcast. Pay is $200. Reprints are fine.

  • Work that is too long, or the wrong format, for features can be considered for standalone zines. These include works up to 15,000 words in length, short anthologies on a topic, or longer poetry chapbooks. These will be made available for sale. Pay is an advance against royalties, to be negotiated.

  • We are open to book-length work, but please be aware that we will be exceptionally picky as we are not primarily a publisher of books and might only produce a few a year. Pay is advance against royalties, to be negotiated.

We are actively looking for translations into English from other languages and will pay both the translator and the original author of the work. Please contact us for more information.

How to Submit

For posts and features, please write us at submissions@tangledwilderness.org with the subject Submission: [name of your submission]. Include your work, formatted in standard manuscript format [link] attached in .rtf, .doc, or .docx format, and not in the body of the email. Reprint submissions are fine, though please tell us if and where the piece has been published previously. Please no simultaneous submissions. Include a cover letter in the body of your email that briefly introduces yourself, the piece you would like to submit, why you are interested in publishing through us, and any other relative information. Feel free to brag, briefly, about previous publications you might have. Note that there is no need to include your “legal” name in your manuscript or email, only the name you would like us to refer to you as. If we accept the submission and need to figure out payment and contracts we can talk about it then. Our turnaround time will vary, but please feel free to follow up with us if we have not responded in two weeks.
