Live Like the World Is Dying Skill Series #7

This zine is available here in print form and comes with a random-colored cover. It’s also available to read for free or to print yourself here.

This zine explains the “why, how, and what” of creating an emergency Go Bag. It is based on the podcast Live Like the World is Dying, episodes 69 and 70.

Call it a bugout bag, an oh-shit bag, a go bag, a camping bag, an oh-notimes-bag, or whatever you want: It’s the stuff you need to be comfortable when you’re not at home. A Go Bag makes it substantially easier to meet basic and crisis needs in more situations. The bag is useful in urban or rural situations alike.

A complete Go Bag includes first aid, hygiene, shelter, food and water, and other important stuff. The one thing that really makes a Go Bag more than what you’d bring camping is the personal effects (copies of documentation, etc.) that you keep in it.

In our philosophy, the point of preparedness is to have your own shit settled so you can contribute to your community. Everything you have prepped means you’re one less person who has to rely on the mutual aid network, and you will be in a better position to help someone out in a disaster, for instance.

But it’s important to remember: You don’t NEED all this stuff, and certainly not all at once. This guide is for when you want to build a Go Bag, and have the resources to do so. It’s ok to slowly build out your bag. No one is fully prepared for every possibility. A Go Bag helps provide peace of mind, so the first little bit that you get is the most useful. You get diminishing returns as you spend more money to upgrade your gear, especially if you’re just adding more and more “stuff.”

The everyday carry items recommended in Part II — especially your cell phone! — are the most important objects. If you have those plus snacks and a water bottle, you are more prepared than most people, and well on your way toward creating a Go Bag.
